Calligraphy II

Calligraphy II Premiered at 1995 St. Mark's Church, NYC
4 female dancers and 3 male dancers
Music: Joan La Barbara

This is the second work the choreographer created based on Chinese Calligraphy. In China, the art of calligraphy represents the most supreme of all art forms because the Chinese people believe that calligraphy comprises, along with traditional Chinese painting, the mainstream of China's art history. Calligraphy can bring physical and spiritual benefits to the practitioner. The choreographer created movement vocabulary based on her observations of the flow of energy in calligraphy and the intensity of the various brush strokes. This choreography also shows the emphasis on composition in calligraphy and the balance between lines and empty spaces.
